Ilion, NY/Irmo, SC
Althea Mason Bullock, age 96, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Lowman Home in White Rock, SC. She was born in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of the late Ada and Frank Russell.
In June 1939, she received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the State College for Teachers (SUNY) in Buffalo, NY. She took the initiative to attend college and worked while attending classes.
In 1941, Althea married Harold Mason and together they raised four children while living in Middleville and Ilion, NY. Althea enjoyed teaching school, starting at East Frankfort and then teaching third grade for many years at Reese Road in the Frankfort-Schuyler School System.
After a total of 27.5 years of teaching, she retired in July 1981.
The education and success of the children she taught was of the utmost importance to her, and she referred to the kids as "my children".
She also liked writing plays for her classes.
She and Harold enjoyed boating and camping with the family. They were members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Mohawk Valley Boat Club. They took many trips to the St. Lawrence River and
Raquette Lake. They liked water skiing and could pull up to six people behind their Penn Yan. Althea was a long time member of both the First Baptist Church in Ilion, NY, and the Church of the Lakes in Inlet, NY.
In her later life, she was happiest at her camp on Fourth Lake in the Adirondacks surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grand children. Althea imparted to her family the values of education and a healthy lifestyle. She was very fond of her cat, Andrew.
In 1982, her husband, Harold, preceded her in death. In 1983, she married John Bullock.
Together they participated in activities with Adirondack Discovery Club, traveled south in the winters, and then moved to Tallahassee, FL, in 1997. John preceded her in death in 1998. In 2002, Althea moved to South Carolina.
She is survived by three children, Maureen (Larry) Bortel of Irmo, SC, Michael (Suzanne) Mason of Schenectady, NY, and Laura Mason of Monona, WI. Her youngest son, David, died in 1967 in a car accident. Her grandchildren are: Kathy (Ernie) Coskrey of Columbia, SC, Laurie (Larry) Ladd of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Pam (Kip) Bembry of Augusta, GA, Julie (Kris) Grimmer and David Mason of Slingerlands, NY, Tony (Lisa) Ally of Milwaukee, WI, and Kristina (Brian) Marth of Windsor, WI.
She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren:
Jesse Schmitz; VJ Ally; Christopher, Rosemary, and Abigail Coskrey; Emma and Jack Ladd; and Maggie, Molly, and Beau Bembry.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion with Rev. Dr. Andrew Peloubet officiating. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon after the service.
