Barbara Ann McGowan Sweeney, 90, passed away Saturday December 10, 2016. Barb was born in Ilion on February 19, 1926, the daughter of the late Archibald and Edna Brand McGowan. She received her education in Ilion and Cortland State and in August of 1978 she was united in marriage with John F. Sweeney, he passed away on September 18, 1994.
Barbara was employed as a Physical Education Teacher at West Canada Valley Central School and Poland Elementary School. Prior to her teaching career, Barb was employed as a nurse's aide at the Ilion Hospital. She was a Master Basket Maker winning many awards, she also enjoyed knitting, gardening, watching birds, crossword puzzles and was a member of the Valley Bells.
Barb is survived by two daughters, Susan (and husband Lynn Backus) of Richfield Springs, Debbie LaMondie of Ilion, and three sons, Richard Parkinson of Amherst, NY, Michael Parkinson
of Folkston, GA and Timothy Parkinson of Houston, TX. She also leaves five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Barb was predeceased by her brothers Archibald McGowan and two sisters Janet Irish and Jean Ford.
A memorial service will take place Friday December 16, 2016 at 5:00 PM from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Otsego St., Ilion, friends may call Friday from 4:00 PM until the time of the funeral.
Friends are asked to consider memorial to the American Heart Association in Barb's memory, envelopes will be available at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home.
