Bernard J. LaValley, 82 of Herkimer, passed away on Saturday December 19, 2015 at home with his loving family by his side.
Bernie was born on January 2, 1933 in Mohawk, he was the son of the late Dean and Melva (Dygert) LaValley, and he attended Mohawk Schools and served in the US Army during the Korean War.
On September 28, 1957 he was united in marriage to the former Shirley Disotelle.
Bernie worked in the gallery and woodworking shop at Remington Arms, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Mohawk American Legion and the Remington Retirees Club.
He was a Jack of all trades who loved fishing, hunting, enjoyed his camp for 42 years at Piseco Lake and snowmobiling.
Bernie is survived by his wife Shirley; a son Steven and his fianc Tamara Heiland of Ilion; a daughter Beth and her husband John Brant of Mohawk; a sister Betty Senft of Ohio; grandchildren Brian and his wife Jessica Brant, Christopher Brant and Jennifer LaValley; a great granddaughter Frankie Ruthford and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by a daughter Karen; a brother Dean Jr, his wife Catherine, two sisters Dorothy Bodenstein, her husband William, and twin Bernice LaValley.
Funeral services for Bernie will be held on Wednesday December 23, 2015 at 6pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion, Pastor Brian Engel will officiate.
Interment will be on Thursday December 24, at the Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 3-6pm at the funeral home and are asked to please consider memorial donations to HOSPICE and Palliative Care.
The Mohawk American Legion will conduct services on Wednesday at 5:30 pm at the funeral home.
Bernie's family wishes to thank the staff at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center for the special care given to Bernie during his illness.
