Schuyler
Beverly Rathbun Gillette passed away on Friday, September 11, 2015 at her home in Schuyler with her Family by her side.
Bev was born September 16, 1930 in Schuyler the daughter of the late James and Ruth Sloughter Rathbun.
Bev was united in marriage with Lowell Frank Gillette on July 11, 1954, and together enjoyed 40 years of marriage, sadly Lowell passed away on December 2, 1994.
Bev attended the one room school house which is currently next to the East Schuyler Fire House. She had a born talent for art and when she was in high school, the current Frankfort Schuyler Knights logo and class ring was designed by Bev in a school contest which her idea and rendering was chosen. After graduation Bev worked at Remington Rand In the 1940's.
When Bev and Lowell where married Lowell with his mechanical ability and Bev with her art and sewing would build stock cars which Bev was the Driver and Lowell the pit crew. Bev was Powder Puff Champion for 18 weeks straight at Fonda Speedway with her driving ability and Dads mechanics.
Bev went to work for Mohawk Valley Ceramics Studio in Herkimer and was the instructor of all forms of ceramics, china painting, and art work, and later opened her own ceramics studio in her home. Bev attended many national seminars on art and has several awards for her work from the National Ceramics Art Institute.
In the early 1970's Bev developed Breast and Lung Cancer which she successfully beat with the excellent treatment provided by Doctor Patrick Dwyer and the Medical Staff at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. During her treatment Bev started to research her family history which developed into a obsession to preserve the rich History of the Mohawk Valley.
Bev was a member of the East Schuyler Methodist Church, Herkimer County Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Founders and Patriots, Colonial Dames of the 15th Century where she served as Past President, National Ceramic Teacher's Association, Past President of the Town of Schuyler Historical Society which she helped found, Assistant Historian for the Town of Schuyler, and Past President of the East Schuyler Miller Cemetery Association.
Bev is survived by her son and daughter in law Darryl and Donna Gillette of Schuyler, a granddaughter and her husband Kristin and Jason West of Schuyler, also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bev's family will receive friends from 4-7 PM Tuesday at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Otsego St. Ilion, funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Beverly and her Family wishes to thank her Family Physician Doctor Joseph Booth and Staff of Deerfield Family Practice who through their excellent care and compassion for many years will never be forgotten.
Also our deepest love to our dear friends Earl and Carol Haman and Dean and Jean Desrochers who have been close family friends who Bev and Lowell enjoyed many good times with over the years.
In lieu of Flowers remembrance Donations may be made to the East Schuyler Miller Cemetery Association. Envelopes will be available at
the funeral home.
