Ilion
Charles Eugene "Whitey" Forbes, 86, of Ilion passed away on Thursday December 24, 2015 at Little Falls Hospital.
Whitey was born on January 1, 1929 in Redfield, NY.
He was the son of the late Lawrence and Flora (Knapp) Forbes.
He was a 1946 graduate of Camden Schools and served for a time in the Army Reserves.
On December 7, 1959 Whitey married the former Shirley Streeter; Shirley passed away in 2013.
Early in Whitey's life he owned and operated the Atlantic Service Station in Herkimer.
Following a move to Florida, Whitey worked as an independent trucker, and finally as a golf cart mechanic at Cypruswood Golf Course. He worked into his late 70's.
Whitey was a member of the Valley Squares Dance Club and the Old Timers Golf Group at Doty's in Ilion. When he was 68 Whitey ran and finished the Utica Boilermaker, something he was very proud of. He was also a pioneer in statewide dirt track racing. He raced every weekend for several years and was a fierce competitor. Shirley and Chuck traveled the world on several cruises.
Whitey is survived by three sons; Timothy and his wife Cheryl, James, and Daniel and his wife Susan, all of Mohawk; a daughter Nancy and her husband Dennis Baker of Ilion.
Whitey has 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He had 8 brothers and sisters as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is predeceased by a daughter Jamie.
Chuck also leaves his Friday night dinner companions who took good care of him after Shirley passed.
A memorial service for Whitey will be held on Monday December 28, 2015 at 7pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion, grandson Peter Norwich will officiate; interment will be in the Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion at a later date.
