New York Mills
Deborah J. Long, 63 of New York Mills, passed away on Thursday October 15, 2015 at Faxton-St. Luke's Health Care.
Debbie was born on January 16, 1952 in Ilion, the daughter of Richard and Gloria (Stroud) Long.
She was a graduate of Ilion Schools and Colgate University, where she was a member of the first class to include woman.
Deb was employed for a number of years by Syracuse University, later accepting an assignment to Utica College where she managed the College Bookstore. At the time of her passing she was employed as a Medical Claims Supervisor at United Health Care in Utica.
Deborah is survived by her father Richard of Ilion; a brother Richard and his wife Debra of FL; three sisters, Laurel R. Voultsios of Syracuse, Alison M. Long and her husband Mark Baker of CT and Cynthia L. Long of Syracuse; she also leaves 11 nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her mother Gloria. Stroud Long.
Debbie had two major interests throughout her life - her nieces and nephews, who she especially loved to read to and entertain as children, and books - for she was a voracious reader throughout her life. Collecting books was not her interest - reading them was, and she typically either gave them away, or recycled them. Upon her death, the entirety of her books have been donated to the Salvation Army.
In the early years after graduating from Colgate, Deb enjoyed the outdoors, and spent time hiking including a portion of the Appalachian Trail.
A memorial service for Deborah will be held on Saturday November 7th at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Ilion, NY with Rev. Ruth Kuo officiating. Calling hours will be 10:00 am to 11:00, with the service at 11:00 am. A friendship celebration will follow up the street from the church at the Ilion Masonic Temple.
Interment will be in the Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion.
Arrangements are with the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion, NY.
