Ilion - Donald L. Day, age 82, of Ilion, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Mohawk Valley.
He was born on August 25, 1941 in Ilion, a son of the late Stanley and Marion Johnson Day and he attended Ilion Schools. He was at one time employed with Aiello's Market in the meat department for 15 years. He was the caregiver to his mother Marion until her passing in 1985. He was active in the BPOE Elks #1444 for 53 years, rising to the level of Exalted Ruler in 1980-1981. He was also employed as Host/Bartender at the Ilion Elks Lodge for 37 years, retiring in February of 2022. He enjoyed working and participating in numerous club activities, including trips to ballgames, horse races, casino and other places of interest. He enjoyed the bantering back and forth with fellow brothers at the club and the special place set aside in his honor, called Don's Dugout.
Don was one of 7 children, four sisters and two brothers; Darrell Day, Esther LeClair Arleta, Doneta Sporney, Sally Bogardis, William Day and Charles "Boots" Day and one very close brother-in-law, George Bogardis. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and his companion who was a great help to him, Chris Harper.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 11am in Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Little Falls. In keeping with Don's wishes, there will be no public calling hours. Arrangements for Don are under the direction of the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. in Ilion.
