Donald J. Parsons, 74, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at home surrounded by his family. Don was born in Herkimer on April 28, 1941 the son of the late Kyle and Harriett Parsons.
Don was a graduate of Mohawk High School, after which he honorably served in the US NAVY.
Don was the successful sole proprietor of Don Parsons Cooling and Heating for decades until his retirement and also Parson's Carriages which he continued to operate until his final days. He was well known throughout the area for his unfailing work ethic, love of horses and antique carriages. Don was involved in numerous horse related organizations as well as with the Millers Mills Grange and the Millers Mills Baptist Church.
Don is survived by two daughters and two sons: Pamela Parsons-Opperman of Albany, Shannon Goodhines of N. Utica, Donald Parsons of Brooklyn, N.Y. (married to Flora Parsons) and Jonathan Shapiro of West Winfield (married to Jessica Shapiro).
Don leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Ashely, Ian and Amelan Parsons, Chase and Chloe Opperman, Alyssa Mullenax, Madison and Bella Goodhines, Carter, Juleah and Emily Shapiro as well as six nieces and nephews.
As well, Don was survived by a dear sister, Judy Dutcher of Mohawk and predeceased by his brother Allen Parsons (married to Gloria Parsons) of Texas.
Don's family will be receiving friends on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home at 100 Otsego St., Ilion, NY from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM when a memorial celebration of his life will begin. Don's inurnment will take place following in the Millers Mills Cemetery after a final beloved ride in his horse drawn carriage.
Following the inurnment, a celebration of Don's life will continue at the Millers Mills Baptist Church where friends and family can share memories.
