Douglas "Twenty Dollar Doug" Russell Hall passed away on Friday morning, September 11, 2015, at the Veteran's Home in Scarborough, Maine, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on November 8, 1932 in Ilion, New York.
He was the son of the late Arthur and Florence (Emrich) Hall, and was educated in Ilion Schools.
In 1952, Doug was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers.
He played with them for a short time, before being drafted to the Army of the United States on November 21, 1952.
He was honorably discharged after two years of service on November 20, 1954.
After his discharge, Doug played AAA baseball for two years with the Brooklyn Dodgers and semi-pro football for two years.
On February 23, 1957, Doug married the love of his life, Joan Elizabeth Smith.
In 1961, Doug went to work at Remington Arms, where he worked until his first retirement in 1986.
Doug was recruited by Saco Defense in 1988, and moved to Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
He worked for six years at Saco Defense, while he and Joan also managed Acorn Self-Service Storage in Westbrook, Maine.
Together, they managed Acorn for thirteen years, before retiring for the final time in 2005.
Doug enjoyed being with his family, and loved summer vacations in Florida and California.
He had fun with his trips to casinos and racetracks to play the horses.
When he would take Joan and Rose to the casino, they would sit in the back seat and listen to Doug share stories about growing up in Ilion.
They were the Three Musketeers.
Doug was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is adored and loved by all, and never met a stranger.
Doug has left behind his wife of fifty eight years, Joan Hall, his brother and sister-in-law Don and Alice Hall of Ilion, New York, his sister-in-law, Juanita Burger of Ilion, New York, and he and Joan's four children and their significant others: Scott Hall and Shelia Servadio of Ilion, New York, Kelly Hall of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, Tracy Kelly and Danny Raye, and Wendy McCarthy and George Rizeakos, all of Saco, Maine.
He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Carly and Allie McCarthy and Sydney and Madison Kelly, all of Saco, Maine.
He also leaves behind close, special friends Rose and Terry McCarthy, Scott McCarthy, Michael Kelly, Nikki Nadeau, Denise and Anthony Langella, Dale and Marlene Christie, and John Yavornitzki, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Doug will also be missed by his loving dog Bella.
Doug is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Florence (Emrich) Hall, his brothers Arthur and Pete, his sisters Arlene, Flora, Doris, Betty, and Etta, and his sister-in-law, Margie Brewer.
Friends and family in New York may call from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday September 19, 2015 at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home - 100 Otsego Street, Ilion, NY.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held in Maine at a later date.
The family would like to extend their most heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough for all of the care and compassion that they showed Doug in his final weeks.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doug's memory may be made to the Central Valley Academy or the Maine Veteran's Home system.
