Florence E. Barnes, 99, of Barnwell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Ilion, passed away Tuesday April 24, 2012 at the Albany Memorial Hospital.
Florence was born July 25, 1912 in Frankfort the daughter of the late Jacob and Lillian Hughes Hoke and shortly after moved to Ilion with her family where she attended the Ilion Public School, graduating in 1930.
In the early 1930's Florence and her family moved back to Frankfort.
Florence married Raymond R. Barnes in 1934 and returned back to Ilion soon after, Raymond passed away March 3, 1987.
Florence was a homemaker, she served in volunteer positions at the First Baptist Church in Ilion where she taught and supervised
the
Children's Christian Education program, served on the Board of Trustees, and was a member of various other committees at church.
Florence also served as a volunteer at the Mohawk Valley General Hospital, in Ilion. Florence enjoyed sewing clothes and especially doll clothes for her children and children of relatives and friends, she loved children and was always able to entertain them. Florence was a very kind and caring person.
She had lived thru two World Wars, and the Great Depression.
During the Depression her family ( mother, father and three brothers and a sister) purchased a farm on the hill overlooking the Mohawk Valley outside of Frankfort, they were able to produce their own food and sell some; her brothers worked other jobs when they were able. Following the depression, two brothers kept the farm, Florence and her Ray continued to help out occasionally after they moved to Ilion in the 30's.
Florence is survived by a son James R. Barnes of Albany, and a daughter Ann E. Adams of Merceed, Ca. and several grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Barnes will be held on Monday April 30, 2012 at 1:30 PM from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego Street Ilion with Rev. Andrew Peloubet officiating.
Interment will follow in the Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion.
Friends may call from 12:30 -1:30 PM at the funeral home.
