George Wilson, 89, of New Hartford, NY, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Wynn Hospital in Utica, NY.
George was born on October 11, 1937, in Carmel, NY, the son of the late Delmar Wilson and Mabel Rands. He attended Waterville Central School, where he completed his high school education.
Following graduation, George answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. A proud veteran of the Korean Conflict era, he honorably served from 1955 to 1963. On April 16, 1956, he was appointed Aviation Boatswain's Mate Third Class (AB3), attaining the rank of Petty Officer Third Class (PO3). During his naval career, George proudly served aboard two aircraft carriers, the USS Shangri-La and the USS Ticonderoga. His years in the Navy were a source of great pride and reflected his dedication, discipline, and commitment to his country.
Following his military service, George began a career with National Grid, where he worked as a foreman in the Meter and Testing Department. His strong work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his professional career.
George was the proud father of four children, Mark, Kristen, Kerri, and Kurt.
On October 5, 1990, George married the love of his life, Angela Giamporcaro, at St. John the Baptist Church in Rome, NY. Together, George and Angela shared 36 years of marriage, building a life centered on love, companionship, and devotion to one another.
An accomplished golfer, George had a lifelong passion for the game, having first fallen in love with golf during his childhood and continuing to play well into his 80s. Some of his fondest memories were made on the golf course, particularly during his annual golf trips with close friends. For 17 years, George enjoyed golfing in Florida, allowing him to continue playing through the winter months. For George, golf was more than a pastime; it was an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, share laughter, and create lasting memories with those closest to him.
A talented stained glass craftsman, George took great pride in creating beautiful, handcrafted pieces for his family and friends. Each creation was a reflection of his patience, creativity, and the care he put into everything he made. His craftsmanship leaves behind treasured keepsakes that his loved ones will continue to cherish.
George also had a great love for traveling, particularly along the East Coast. From the beaches of New Jersey to the shores of Florida and the Florida Keys, he found happiness wherever the ocean met the sand. He had a special appreciation for the beauty of the ocean and enjoyed walking the beaches, collecting seashells, and taking in the peacefulness of the shoreline. These travels brought him countless wonderful memories and reflected his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
Above all else, George's greatest joy was his family. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and treasured the time they spent together. Affectionately known as "Big Papa," "Papa Georgio," and "Grandpa," George held a special place in the hearts of each generation of his family. Whether sharing stories, offering a laugh, or simply enjoying time together, George created memories that will be cherished for years to come. His love for his family will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
George leaves behind his beloved wife of 36 years, Angela Wilson; his four children, Mark Wilson and his wife, Kim, Kristen and her husband, Mark F. Joseph, Kerri Wilson, and Kurt Wilson; his cherished grandchildren, Cody and Lisa Wilson, Shelby Bohling, Amanda and Mark Montana; Gianna and Vinny Iocovozzi, Rachael and Kevin Charmant; Luke, Sadie, and Matt Wilson; and his adored great-grandchildren, Mila Rose; Ella, and Aria; and Cole. He also leaves behind his loving sister, Kay Holt, and her children, Valarie, Brian, Dale, and Todd; along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who held a special place in his heart.
He was predeceased by his parents, Delmar Wilson and Mabel Rands.
George's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated doctors and nurses who cared for him throughout his illness. Their kindness, compassion, and attentive care brought comfort to George and his loved ones during a difficult time. The family extends a very special thank you to his cardiologist, Dr. Fred Talerico, for his exceptional care, compassion, and dedication to George. They are also deeply grateful to George's friends and neighbors for their unwavering love, friendship, and support. The kindness and generosity shown to George and his family will always be remembered and sincerely appreciated.
In keeping with George's wishes, there will be no public calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford, NY, on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
