Jamie DeJohn, 47, passed away peacefully at his home in Sylvan Beach on Friday, February 28, 2025.
Born on July 14, 1977, in Ilion, NY, Jamie was the beloved son of Lorraine “Brenda” Sweet DeJohn and the late James “Chip” DeJohn. He was a proud graduate of Ilion High School, Class of 1995, and continued his education at Herkimer County Community College.
Jamie spent several years as a bartender at the Herkimer Polish Club before moving to Asheville, NC, where he built a life and career as a manager and bartender at Highland Brewing Company. During his 15 years in Asheville, Jamie formed lasting friendships and was known for his quick wit, infectious humor, and kind heart. He had a natural ability to make people laugh and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
A passionate collector of sports cards, Jamie also loved traveling with friends and visiting casinos. His generosity and warmth were evident to all who knew him. One of his favorite sayings was, “The world holds my jacket,” and now, for the last time, on February 28, 2025, he leaves it behind.
Jamie is survived by his loving mother, Lorraine “Brenda” DeJohn; his sisters, Lori (Steve) Gray of York, SC, and Coleen Seymour of Ilion; his nephews, Daniel and Kyle Gray; his nieces, Erin Gray and Libby Seymour; his great-niece and nephew, Nolan and Ella Gray; his uncle, Steve Miller of Ilion; his aunts, Ceil DeJohn, Eleanor (Bill) Stubba, Rick (Debbie) DeJohn, and Prudy Seamon, Nanette Sweet; as well as numerous cousins and cherished friends, including Janice, Brenden, Scott, Ben, Eva, and his little Buddy. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was predeceased by his father, Chip; his uncle, James “Erkie” Sweet; his aunts, Letha Cousins and Patricia Miller; his cousin, Zachary Seamon; his paternal grandparents, Joe and Grace DeJohn; his maternal grandparents, Ward and Ann Sweet; and his beloved dog, Peanut.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St., Ilion, NY 13357, followed by a funeral service at the funeral home with Father Paul Catena officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jamie’s memory to the Herkimer County Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
