Jerome David 'David' Schafer

J. David Schafer, 75 of Ilion passed away on Thursday October 23, 2014 at the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center in Ilion.
David was born on March 25, 1939 in Oneida; the son of Francis and Coletta (Loosman) Schafer. A graduate of Canastota High School, class of 1957 he was an Army Veteran serving from 1963 to 1965 Dave graduated from Syracuse University earning a BA degree. He worked at Niagara Mohawk for 29 years until his retirement in 1994.
He was an accomplished wrestler both in high school and college he also enjoyed golf at McConnellsville and Honey Hills. He very much enjoyed feeding and watching his bird friends.
David was predeceased by a sister Paula Pierce, he is survived by a niece Kimberlee Pierce; four cousins John Loosman, Monsignor Timothy Elmer, Maureen Elmer, and Steven Elmer. He also leaves a brother in law Tom Pierce and his companion Sophia "Toby" Newberry.
David's family wishes to thank the staff at Mohawk Valley Health Care Center for the excellent care and loving attention shown David during his stay.
A graveside service for David will be held on Saturday November 1, 2014 at 11 am. Father Timothy Elmer will officiate the service to be held at The Valley-View Cemetery in Sherrill, NY.
Arrangements are with the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion.
