Chittenango - Ilion - Kathryn P. Melnick, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024 at The Grand of Chittenango at the age of 100..Kathryn was a long-time resident of Ilion. She was born on April 7, 1923 on Vickerman Hill in Mohawk, the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Behun Bawolak. She attended Fern Cliff Country School for 8 years and then graduated from Mohawk High School in 1941. She married Theodore Melnick on June 5, 1948 in St. Augustine's Church in Ilion. The two shared a blessed union until Theodore's passing on February 25, 2004. She worked at Remington Rand for several years and was employed with Howlands Department Store in Herkimer for several years. She also worked the elections for many years in Ilion.
Kathryn especially liked spending time with her family, gardening, reading, bowling and going to the casinos.
Kathryn is survived by her beloved children, Deborah Audley and her husband Edward of Bridgeport; two sons, Gary Melnick of New Hartford and David Melnick of Schertz, TX; her grandchildren, Jennifer of Camillus, John and his wife, Katy of Minburn, Iowa, Kelly of Ilion, Shane of California and Amber of Texas; 3 great-grandchildren, Theo, Matthew and Braydon and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Theodore, Kathryn was predeceased by one brother and sister in law, Stephen and Grace Bawolak and 4 sisters and brothers in law, Anna and Charles Casler, Helen and Edward Pelko, Olga and Chris Kafer and Susan and George Moore as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Kathryn's life on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 2:30 pm in the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St in Ilion, with Father Steve Scarcia of St. Augustine's Episcopal Chuch, officiating. Calling hours will take place from 1:00 pm until the time of services in the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home. Interment will be held later in the Spring beside her husband, Theodore in Armory Hill Cemetery.
Her family would like to thank the amazing staff at The Grand of Chittenango for their love and care and a special thank you to Danica, Abby and Karen.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Kathryn's memory may be made to the Ilion Public Library, 78 West St. Ilion, NY 13357 or to the Herkimer Humane Society, 514 NY- 5S, Mohawk, NY 13407. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
