ROME - Mary Ann Hafner, 69, a loving and devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and beloved friend to many, peacefully passed away on August 29th, 2026. Born September 8th, 1956 in Jamaica, Queens, and raised in Babylon, Long Island, Mary's life was a testament to the value of a life lived in the service of others.

Mary dedicated more than 40 years to her nursing career. In her home of Long Island, she worked at Good Samaritan Hospital, Berkshire Nursing Home, Ross Nursing Home, Broadlawn Manner Nursing Home, Recco Home Care, and South Shore Home Health Services. Mary additionally served the community of Margaretville as a nurse at both Margaretville Central School and Mountainside Residential Care. For years, she healed Margaretvilleans of all ages and helped them through life's most vulnerable moments. She led with empathy, acted as a non-judgemental support system for others, and was guided by a strong sense of morality. Mary embodied the value at the core of nursing, to be devoted to the welfare of not just those in her care, but for all those she met.

As a student at Babylon High School, she played the violin, sang in the school choir, and performed in school plays. She loved live music and dancing to all the music of the 70s with her friends. She was a lifelong fan of soap operas, her favorite being General Hospital. Mary supported local businesses of Margaretville, with the Margaretville Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop being a favorite of hers. When she was not sharing her healing gifts at work, Mary enjoyed spending time with her beloved dog and cats. Mary loved volunteering at Heart of the Catskills Humane Society where she walked dogs waiting for their forever homes.

Mary's sweetness, kindness, and intelligence offered an inspiring example to emulate for all those lucky enough to have known her. She always led with kindness and compassion.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Hafner; her daughter, Courtney Scheffler; her beloved granddaughter, Euphemia Hafner; one brother, William Courtney; one sister, Cecile and her husband, Daniel Mazza and many friends. She was predeceased by her spouses, Thomas Hafner and Steven Scheffler and one brother, Donald Courtney.

In keeping with Mary's wishes, there will be no public services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St., Ilion, NY 13357.
