Nelson A. Pardee, 89, of Ilion passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014 in the Veterans Hospital, Syracuse.
Nelson was born on December 1, 1924 in Norway, NY the son of the late Charles and Mildred Lanphier Pardee and attended East Frankfort School and received his diploma following his military service. Nelson served in the US Army Air Corps, during WWII obtaining the rank of T/Sgt.
While serving overseas in the 8th Air Force, 100th Bomb Group, 350th Squadron his plane was shot down over Berlin, on his 26th mission, he was captured and held prisoner and spent 9 months in Stalag Luft IV as a POW. He was part of what was known as the Black March. They were forced to march under guard of German Troops while sleeping in barns and fields and eating whatever food we could find. The march lasted approximately 86 days until they were liberated by the British.
He was awarded the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and received a Purple Heart.
On October 19, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Thelma Denton, she passed away on November 25, 2000.
Nelson was a former Commander of Ex POW's, a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a member of the Ilion Masonic Lodge, and also coached Little League many years ago.
Nelson is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law; Robert and Laura Pardee of Ilion, Dennis and Lisa (Rider) Pardee of Ilion, two daughters and sons-in-law; Dr. Deborah Pardee and Tom Miller of Colorado Springs, CO, Patricia Ann and Steve Quest of Ill., a brother Merrill Pardee of Ilion, and seven grand children Adam, Shawna, Erica, Alex, Allison, Arrielle and Andrew, also 3 great grand children.
Friends are invited to attend Nelson's funeral services on Thursday June 5, 2014 at 12 noon from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc. 100 Otsego St., Ilion with Funeral Celebrant Carolyn McPeak- Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion with Military Honors. Calling hours will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc.
