Ilion - Mrs. Norma Jean Karla, 82, of Ilion, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at the Masonic Home, with her loving husband by her side.
She was born in Little Falls, NY on May 2, 1942 to the late William and Catherine Roberts. She graduated from Ilion High School with the class of 1959. She went on to obtain her degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Oswego. She was married to Robert Karla on August 16, 1969 at Ilion United Methodist Church. Norma had a passion for education and dedicated many years of her life as a teacher at Remington School in Ilion until her retirement in 1999. She continued to educate as a substitute teacher following her retirement.
She was a faithful member of Morning Star United Methodist Church in Ilion and had also served as Secretary to their Administrative Board. She was a former member of Ilion's Red Hat Society and served as an Election Inspector for the Herkimer County Board of Elections for many years. She enjoyed knitting decorative kitchen hand towels and dish cloths, traveling around the country by motorhome, and entertaining at the family camp.
She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 55 years, Robert Karla of Ilion; her children, Jodi Karla of Herkimer and Sean Karla and his wife Maureen of Skaneateles; her cherished grandchildren, Tyler Arsenault and his wife, Jennie, Kyle Arsenault, Ryan Karla and Ethan Karla; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Arsenault and Aiden Arsenault; one brother, Donald Roberts and his wife, Sondra of Mohawk; one sister, Ursula "Sue" Powers and her husband Royce of Fort Myers, FL; one nephew, David Powers and his wife, Jennie of Noblesville, IN and their daughters, Megan and Emily and many cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Jody Tanner Karla and a niece, Rhonda Powers.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 25th, 2024 at 11:00 am in the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. Ilion, NY, with Pastor Joelle Faulks, officiating. Calling hours will take place on Thursday morning from 10:00 am until the time of services at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest in Dolgeville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Norma's memory may be made to the Jody Tanner Karla Scholarship Fund, c/o Central Valley Central School Business Office, 111 Frederick St. Ilion, NY 13357. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
