Ilion - Richard D. Basler, age 89, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, after a brief illness at Wynn Hospital in Utica, NY.
Born on November 24, 1935, in Mohawk, NY, he was the son of the late Carl O. Basler and Esther (Dilker) Basler. Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force and later worked at Univac before establishing his own successful business, Basler’s Roofing and Siding.
On June 29, 1957, he married the love of his life, Joan (Ford) Basler of Watertown, NY, with whom he shared many wonderful years. Joan predeceased him, as did his beloved sister, Barbara Carpenter.
A hard-working and kind-hearted man, Richard was known for his love of fishing and could often be found spending time at the Ilion Marina. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, devotion to family, and his dry sense of humor.
He is survived by his seven children: Don Basler of Frankfort, NY; Debbi and her husband, Len Amodio, of Kennesaw, GA; Dan and his wife, Nadine Basler, of Ilion, NY; Dorri and her husband, Mike DeRollo, of Frankfort, NY; Dotti and her husband, Sal Gerace, of North Carolina; Della Smith of Herkimer, NY; and Dennis Basler and his partner, Stephanie Chimento, of Herkimer, NY. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and pride.
Richard’s children would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Jeff and Joyce Petrie for their years of unwavering support and friendship to their father. They also extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Wynn Hospital for the compassionate care provided to him during his final days.
In keeping with Richard's wishes, there will be no formal services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. Ilion, NY 13357.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard's memory may be made to the Ilion Elks Veterans Committee, 8 West St. Ilion, NY 13357.
