Rodney Hamford Schaffer

May 26, 1943 — March 22, 2025

Ilion - Mr. Rodney H. Schaffer, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 22, 2025. At the time of Rod's passing, he resided with his son, Russell and Cathy in Newport, NY.

Rodney shared a blessed union for over 50 years with his late wife, Geraldine. Dad was an avid deer and coon hunter, a passion which he shared with his two sons, Rodney and Russell, along with his four grandsons, Russell Jr, Brandon, Rodgie and William. Rod was one of the most caring people. He loved everyone. He always loved having company, no matter the time of day. Rod would give you the shirt off his back. He had a deep love for his family. When his children and grandchildren would visit, they could make all kinds of noise and Rod could go to sleep. He just loved them being there. One of Rod's favorite things to do was go for a ride with his sister, Jean. He loved old westerns and playing cards with his family. He was pretty hard to beat. Rod enjoyed sitting and looking out his bay window. He loved watching the squirrels run around and he loved watching the birds. His son Russell bought him a bird feeder and he would not let anyone park in front of his window or his bird feeder. He would tell Russ to have them move it.

Rod leaves behind to mourn his loss his children; Geraldine (Jason) Ortiz of Schuyler, Rodney (Mindy) Schaffer of Ilion, Russell (Cathy) Schaffer of Newport, Vicki Talerico of Orange City, FL, Sue Schaffer of Charryvill, NC and Rosa (Potsie) Schaffer of Ilion; his grandchildren who all loved and adored him, Brittney (Angel), Steven (Amber), Jason (Jackie), David Talerico, Samantha (Mike), Madison Ghould, Amanda (James), Christine (Isirel), Kelly Vandorn, Charlie Vandown, Rodney (Shana), Melissa (Matt), Ashley (Mike), Russell Schaffer Jr., Brandon (Samantha), William (Laken) and Lexi Fuller; several great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews; two sisters, Jean Wehrle and Karen Lamb; one brother, Richard Schaffer and one brother and sister in law, William and Barbara Saxe.

Rodney was predeceased in death by his wife, Geraldine who he missed deeply; two brothers, Ronnie and James Schaffer; two brothers-in-law, Harold Wehrle and Louie Lamb and one sister-in-law, Thora Schaffer.

Rod's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his niece, Carrie Wilcox for her care and compassion, taking care of Dad.
