Ilion - Mrs. Verna Mae Vandawalker, 90, of Ilion, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2024 at the Wynn Hospital in Utica.
Verna Vandawalker, born on March 7, 1933, in Frankfort, was the beloved daughter of the late Cecil D. and Izetta Lonis Fifield Capes. In 1949, she embarked on a lifelong journey with Edward Vandawalker when they were joined in matrimony in Cedarville. Verna dedicated a significant portion of her life to the noble profession of nursing, serving with unwavering dedication at Ilion Hospital and later at Mohawk Valley General Hospital.
Beyond her illustrious career, Verna was an active member of her community, lending her support to the Friends of the Library in Ilion. She found solace and purpose in her faith as a devoted member of Morningstar United Methodist Church in Ilion. Verna's creativity knew no bounds, particularly in the realm of needlework, where she crafted exquisite pieces of art, each a cherished gift for her children.
In her leisure time, Verna reveled in the tranquility of her camp on Canadarago Lake, where she created enduring memories with her loved ones. An avid reader, she immersed herself in the world of literature, finding joy in the pages of countless books. Verna's passion for "The Hunt" at garage sales and estate sales was a testament to her keen eye for hidden treasures.
Verna Vandawalker's life was a tapestry of dedication, creativity, faith, and adventure, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Verna is survived by her beloved children, Carol Lewandowski and her companion, Patrick Accuri of New Hartford, Mary Beth Murray of Ilion, Lee Vandawalker and his wife, Kandy of Ilion and Gary Jon Vandawalker of East Syracuse; her grandchildren Christian Lewandowski, Erika Root and her husband Kenneth, Kaitlyn Murray, Ian and His wife Kristen Vandawalker, Tracy Vandawalker, Rae Ann Vandawalker, Kurt Vandawalker, Gretchen Vandawalker; her great grandchildren, Alexa Root, Makenna Root and Addison Vandawalker; and one sister and brother in law, Mary and Paul Lupinski of Ilion. She was predeceased by one grandson, Joshua Lewandowski.
In keeping with Verna's wishes, services will be held privately at the convenience of her family. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Edward in Armory Hill Cemetery later in the Spring. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. in Ilion.
