Virginia H. “Ginny” Phelps, 77, of Ilion, NY, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 22, 1948, to the late William Fullem and Virginia H. (Wheelock) Fullem.
Ginny was a graduate of Ilion High School, Class of 1966, and later attended the Utica School of Commerce. She spent her career managing the family-owned Phelps Repair Shop, where she played a vital role in the operation of the garage and towing business.
Beyond her career, Ginny was known for her love of family, friends, and hobbies. She enjoyed bowling in leagues with her husband, sewing, needlepoint, and crafting. Some of her fondest memories were sitting by the pool with a good book, hosting family dinners in the garage or by the pool and traveling to places like Maine and Niagara Falls. She also loved taking walks with her husband and sharing meaningful conversations at the kitchen table, a place where friends and family often gathered for her famous "worldly advice." Ginny also loved to dance, whether it was in the kitchen, at weddings, or in the living room, she never missed a chance to move to the music with a smile on her face. Ginny had a deep appreciation for life, always finding joy in the little things, and her warmth and wisdom touched the lives of all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Shauna M. Jones and her husband Michael, Kristi L. Phelps and her husband Steven Caufield, and Casey A. Phelps and his wife Jaci. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Brittany R. Milos, Wesley J. Wright and his wife Cassie, Tyler J. Wright and his wife Katarina, Taylor J. Wright, and Sarah S. Phelps, as well as her great-grandchildren, Layla Jaikin, Kain Jaikin, Hayden Wright, and Waylon Wright, with a fifth great-grandchild, Jane Lacey Wright, expected soon. She is also survived by her brother Michael Fullem of Rome, NY and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Allen Phelps, who passed away on August 31, 1997, as well as her brother, William Fullem Jr.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to Jaci Phelps for the wonderful care she provided to Ginny in her final years, as well as to Hospice and Cindy Edmunds for their compassionate support.
In keeping with Ginny’s wishes, there will be no public services. Her funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St, Ilion, NY 13357.
