Walter J. Fuhrer, 84, of 337 Otsego St. passed away Friday, January 11, 2013 at Faxton-St. Luke's Health Care, New Hartford.
Walt was born December 16, 1928 in Westfield, Pa. the son of the late Walter and Thelma (Watkins) Fuhrer, he attended Westfield schools and served in the Navy, as an airman aboard the USS Midway, during WWII. Walt was united in marriage with Elsie Houghtaling on October 29, 1949 in Pennsylvania. He was employed by CNG (Dominion) in Frankfort until his retirement in 1989.
Walt was a member of Local 69 of The Utility Workers of America; he was also a member of the Ilion Fish and Game Club.
Walt is survived by his wife Elsie, 3 sons and 3 daughters in law Clinton and Kathleen, Michael, Steven and Christine and Jan all of Ilion, his seven grandchildren Brian and his girlfriend Shiela of Ilion, Steven and his fianc Alyssa of Herkimer, Mellissa and her husband Bob Suhocki of Mohawk, Karen and her fianc Brent of Rochester, Gregory and his girlfriend Bonnie of Mohawk, Becky Eysaman of Ilion and Vicky and Her husband John Lynch of Ilion also 7 great grandchildren. Walt is also survived by 2 brothers, Stanley and his wife Kathy of Florida, Merton and his friend Dave of Wellsboro, Pa., his 4 sisters Grace and Al Dickgieser of Washinton State, Joyce Lester and her companion Dave of Warren, Pa., Betty and Dick Colvin of E. Corning, N.Y. and Nona and Gary Graham of Wellsville, N.Y. 2 brother in laws and their wives Durell and Shirley Houghtaling of Westfield and Sheldon and Elizabeth Houghtaling of W. Va. He was predeceased by his son Ronald in 2009 and 2 sisters Gertrude Fuhrer and Norma Houghtaling.
In keeping with Walter's wishes there will be no public calling hours and a memorial service will be held at a time and place in the spring. Arrangements are with the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc., 100 Otsego St., Ilion.
