Tempe, AZ - White, Rev. Wiley H. - Wiley was 91 and was born in Utica, New York.
He grew up in Ilion, NY and graduated from Ilion HS in June of 1944, six months after being drafted into the Army. He had entered the Army during high school and was a World War II infantryman in the 10th armored division, termed the "Ghost Division". At the end of the war, he along with many of his peers processed displaced persons and victims of Hitler's Holocaust housed in Dachau with much difficulty. Following the war, he worked for his brother Sanford at Whitlock's for nearly ten years and while there went on to graduate Magna cum Laude from Syracuse University. Following his marriage, he became a Methodist minister and graduated from Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. He served as a Methodist minister for 30 years in New York.
Wiley and Marjorie Ruth Suits were married in 1954 and had three children, Jonathan, Clarissa, Marilyn, and later Wiley would include adoptive children Mary and Jeffrey DeMann and their family. Wiley and Marjorie retired in 1987. In 1997, they moved out to Arizona where Marjorie passed away that same year. This was a difficult adjustment for Wiley, but he learned to press on. After visiting family back East for nearly 20 years, one of his favorite retirement activities in Arizona was painting. He participated in the New Frontiers learning program and especially enjoyed mentoring of some of his art students. He is survived by his children, 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and his brother, Dr. David White. He was predeceased by his father, Leo White, mother, Lucy White, sisters Dorathy and Audry, and brother Sanford. Wiley was a faithful Christian who loved the Lord and inspired many, especially his immediate family, with his great sense of humor, love, sermons, and discussions about faith, current events, and history that reflected his personal life in a real way. Everyone should have a friend, father, brother, and grandfather like Wiley.
