William S. 'Bill' Tiel

William S. Tiel, 95, of Oneonta, passed away at home, in Oneonta, on Saturday May 1, 2021.
Bill was born on June 9, 1925 in Middletown, NY, he was the son of, the late, Robert and Margaret Rockafellow Tiel.
He graduated from Mechanicsville high school and obtained an Engineering degree in 1950 from RPI. Bill was employed as a Civil Engineer for 30 years at NYSDOT and was a Licensed Land Surveyor in the valley for 50 years. He served in the US Air Force during WWII retiring from the Air Force Reserve with the rank of Major. Bill was a 50-year member of the Ilion Elks Lodge #1444, and long time member of the American Legion.
He was a founding member of the NYS P.E.L.S society.
Bill is survived by his daughters; Lynn Tiel Cave Stone and Mary Anne Tiel Thuma, stepdaughter Marianne Lee, stepson Timothy Purcell and their families. His grandchildren Sarah Cave, William and Kelly Cave, and three great grandchildren, Collin, Madelyn,and Gavin.
He also leaves several nieces and a nephew, a sister in law Elizabeth Stagg, and his faithful dog Gotcha.
Bill is predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Tiel Reardon, wife Kathryn Ruff, wife Anne Stagg Purcell, his stepson Michael Purcell and special friend Olivia Gibbins.
Thanks to his many friends through the years, Charles Thuma, and to the residents and staff of the Plains in Oneonta for their kindness.
Special recognition for the care received from Caring Friends and Companions, and Helios Care, during his last weeks. A graveside service for Bill will be held on Friday May 14, 2021 at 11 am in the North Columbia Cemetery, Deacon James Bower will officiate.
There are no calling hours.
