Capt. William L. Hendrix, USMC-Ret.
William L. Hendrix passed away on Monday September 5, 2011 in Herkimer, NY, after a long illness
Bill was born on June 6, 1934 in Ilion the son of the late Clarence and Mayme "Dutch" (Stephens) Hendrix.
Bill married the former Audrey Pearson in Ilion, she passed away in 1999.
Bill joined the New York National Guard in 1950 and graduated from Ilion High School with the class of 1952.
Following graduation, Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corp retiring in 1973.
Bill was most proud of his service as a drill instructor at both Paris Island and San Diego, training over 630 recruits.
In 1967 Bill was commissioned as an officer.
He served two tours in Viet Nam.
Bill was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for valor, a Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon with 5 stars for additional awards, the National Defense
with 1 star, Viet Nam Service Ribbon with 3 stars, the Drill Instructor Award with 7 stars, and the Viet Namese Presidential Unit Citation.
Bill loved being a Marine.
Bill is survived by his daughters and son in laws; Judith Hendrix of Jacksonville NC, Patricia Hendrix and Dennis Wright of Ilion, Diane and Talbot Balla of Herkimer, Ida and GySgt. Chat Dickinson of Okinawa, Jennifer and Gregg Goble of Burgaw NC and Timothy and Karen Kellogg of Longmont CO.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Shawn and Kirsten Kellogg and Benjamin Kellogg of Denver Co, Lyndsay and Brett Bala of Herkimer, Jenna and Gage Dickinson of Okinawa; 3 great grandsons; his brother and sister in law Donald and Shirley Pearson of Ilion; niece Cynthia (David) Garrett and nephews Doug (Ruth) Pearson and Dale Pearson.
He was predeceased by his daughter Suzanne Hendrix Kellogg.
Funeral services for Bill will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 11:30 am, with the V. Rev. Anthony Barrett officiating, from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion.
Friends may call on Saturday from 9:30 am until the time of the funeral.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Barracks at Camp LeJuene, NC. Envelopes will be available at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home.
